USB audio allows you to listen to your audio source through a USB-C wired connection, offering a digital and “lossless” audio quality; hear exactly what was created without any loss of the original data. This is particularly useful for USB-C source devices such as computers or mobile devices when gaming or listening to lossless audio files. Over a USB-C connection using USB audio, the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) can receive audio signals at 16-bit, 44.1kHz or 48kHz from compatible source files.

In Aware Mode, when ActiveSense is enabled, your headphones will automatically activate and adjust noise cancellation in response to your environment’s noise level in order to keep your surrounding noise levels more constant. This way, you can remain aware of your surroundings without having your music drowned out by interruptions like loud appliance motor noises such as a coffee grinder or blender. ActiveSense can be enabled and disabled in the Aware mode setting.

QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) have three control inputs on the right earcup: a Bluetooth/power button at the bottom, a multi-function button in the back and a capacitive volume/shortcut-activation strip along the back edge. Additionally, the headphones are equipped with on-head/off-head detection, which is another way to control the product.

• The Bluetooth/power button is used to power the headphones on/off, put the headphones in pairing mode, cycle through paired devices and more.

• The multi-function button supports audio playback (e.g., play/pause/skip), telephone calls (e.g., answer/decline calls), mode switching (e.g., Quiet, Aware, Immersion) and more.

• Swiping along the volume strip changes volume, and pressing and holding it activates a user-configurable shortcut.

• Putting the headphones on and taking them off controls wake/sleep/auto-off and resume/pause. Auto-off can be customised in the Bose app.

QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) will automatically disconnect after 10 min and then transition to low power (sleep) when they are off your head for a total of 30 minutes. If you prefer to quickly disconnect the headphones within a few seconds, lay them flat on a horizontal surface (earcups facing up or down). To resume using your headphones even days/weeks later, simply put them back on your head and wait a few seconds for them to power on (listen for tones and voice prompts).

The headphones can also be manually powered on and off using the Bluetooth/power button at the bottom of the right earcup. To turn off, press and hold the Bluetooth/power button until you hear a strum tone, then release the button. To turn back on, press the Bluetooth/power button and put the headphones back on your head; wait a few seconds for tones and voice prompts (if enabled) to indicate the headphones are ready for playback.

Favourites allow you to choose which listening modes are accessible using the multi-function button on the right earcup. Press and hold the button and each of your favourite modes is announced in sequence. When you hear the mode you want, release the button.

You can change your favourites in the Bose app. You can save up to 10 favourite listening modes to cycle through from your headphones, but many more listening modes can be set and managed from the Bose app.

A shortcut enables you to quickly and easily access a function of your choice by touching and holding the volume strip on the right earcup of your QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). By default, the shortcut is turned off. You can turn it on and choose to have the shortcut cycle through Immersive Audio settings (Still, Motion, and Off), activate Spotify Tap, use your mobile device’s voice assistant, or read out the remaining battery life.

QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) allow you to access your device’s voice assistant (such as Siri, Google and Bixby). Use the Bose app to set the shortcut to access your voice assistant. When you press and hold the volume strip, your voice assistant will listen for a command from the microphones in your headphones.

Wired USB-C audio will allow for Lossless audio that may be an ideal solution for most gamers. Additionally, users with Snapdragon Sound sources will be able to use the gaming mode feature for lower latency gaming. When “Gaming Mode” is turned on, Snapdragon Sound’s apt-X Adaptive codec will “adapt” for a better mobile gaming experience.

Yes. You can connect the headphones to a mobile device without the app using the mobile device’s Bluetooth settings. However, you need the Bose app to fully enjoy all the features of the product, make settings adjustments and download updates.

Yes. Connect your headphones to a USB-C powered source to charge your headphones and wear them as you normally would. Your headphones may take longer to charge than if they were not in use while charging.

No. Avoid using QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) in situations where they may get wet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Details Review and Comparison I know this is probably a little overkill — especially since I’m not a YouTube influencer — but I actually purchased both the Apple AirPods Max 2 and the Bose QC Ultra (U2) at the same time to decide which one I preferred. I tested both thoroughly and made a list of pros and cons. Ultimately, the Bose QC U2 won for me, although they aren’t perfect. The AirPods Max 2 sounded better across the board in music and movies, both wired and wireless (tested on an iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, Windows gaming PC, Windows laptop, and a Switch OLED). Oddly enough, even after adjusting the Bose EQ, I still couldn’t match the AirPods Max 2 sound. That being said, the Bose definitely do not sound bad at all — this is purely personal preference. I’d rate the AirPods Max 2 a 9.5 and the Bose an 8.9 which is still very good. As you can tell, I own a lot of Apple products, so yes, the Apple integration was convenient. But the ability in the Bose app to pick and choose from saved connections is a really great feature across non‑Apple devices. Transparency Mode AirPods Max 2 win this easily. No surprise there. Noise Cancellation For me, the Bose slightly outperformed the AirPods Max 2, scoring a 9 vs. 8.5. However, this flips when talking on the phone. The AirPods Max 2 block out background noise almost completely. The Bose don’t block as much background noise, but they do boost my voice and make it sound clearer on FaceTime. Pros and cons both ways — neither performs badly. Comfort Bose is the winner here. The AirPods Max 2 clamp force was too strong for my liking. Not painful, but noticeable. I can wear the Bose for extended periods with zero discomfort. I also think the QC U2 headband is far superior in comfort over the AirPods Max 2 Portability & Case Another win for Bose. The AirPods Max 2 don’t fold compactly, and the case… well, let’s just say it’s not great. The QC Ultras fold properly and come with a functional carrying case. Sure, there are better third‑party cases, but the Bose case does the job and fits nicely in a carry‑on. Buttons & Controls Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of the buttons or touch sensor on the QC U2. The AirPods Max 2 controls are incredibly precise — honestly, nothing else comes close. Sorry Bose. Battery Life Another Bose win. Thirty hours vs. twenty, and you can actually turn the Bose off with a power button. (Come on Apple — how hard is that?) Weight Bose wins hands down. I didn’t think the AirPods Max 2 weight was that bad… until I put on the Bose. That extra 100+ grams makes a night‑and‑day difference. Style I’ll give this one to the AirPods Max 2, but with a caveat: the premium metal build adds weight and makes them easier to scratch or damage. The QC U2s still look great and are far less worry‑inducing. Gym Use Not many reviewers score this, but I will — Bose wins here too. I’d give them an 8.5 vs. the AirPods’ 7. Not because of sound or stability, but because of two things: 1 - The AirPods Max 2 ear cups are fabric. Sweat turns them into damp clothes on your head. 2- The weight difference. You feel it, especially whilst working out. The Bose do get warmer faster, but that doesn’t outweigh the sweat issue or the weight. Price The AirPods Max 2 are overpriced — no ifs, ands, or buts. Yes, they’re premium with more metal, and I get that. But the Bose are no slouch in premium styling or features, and they win here easily — especially since I got them on a limited sale. A Few Things I Don’t Love About the QC U2 The App The app is finicky — frustratingly so. I’m on the latest version, but around 80% of the time the headset doesn’t automatically connect to my iPhone 17 Pro Max, which is the device I use most. I open the app, press connect, and half the time it still won’t connect unless I manually put the headset into pairing mode. Very frustrating, and it undermines the multipoint advantage. Hopefully this can be fixed with a firmware update. Buttons & Touch Bar As mentioned earlier, the controls aren’t great. The touch bar doesn’t offer enough granular control and isn’t as sensitive as it should be. The buttons aren’t conveniently placed and feel cheap for a premium device. Honestly, the touch controls on the old NC700s were better. Internal Cup Noise This one is odd, but if I shake my head side to side, I can feel and hear internal components inside the ear cups thud against my ears. I know most people won’t be shaking their head like that, but as a muso who does some dancing and choreography, I’d expect to be able to wear these during light movement without that issue. I own a lot of Apple products, but as a muso I also own a lot of Bose professional gear, so I don’t think I’m biased either way. I’ve tried to give the most accurate and honest review I can. Final Score: 4 out of 5 stars. I would definitely recommend the QC U2 to anyone looking to buy or upgrade their headset.
